{"id":834,"date":"2012-12-03T17:35:14","date_gmt":"2012-12-03T17:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/?p=834"},"modified":"2012-12-03T17:57:19","modified_gmt":"2012-12-03T17:57:19","slug":"beam-transport-to-whitby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/2012\/beam-transport-to-whitby\/","title":{"rendered":"Beam Transport to Whitby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bit of background:\u00a0 The Whitby Cottage renovation \/restoration\u00a0needs a new beam to support the bathroom floor, (<a href=\"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/2012\/floor-in-need-of-support\/\">read Whitby Cottage Floor in Need of Support<\/a>), how it\u2019s lasted as long as it has with a cast iron bath in up there I don\u2019t know.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The plan to make new, additional beam with a column in the middle made sense.\u00a0 Approximately 8hrs. up in the woods and we had hand hewn a beam and column from a larch tree.\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/sections\/DIY\/Hewing_Beam\/Hewn_beam.html\">read the full Hand Hewing with froe, axe and adze story<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This left me with two large, heavy pieces of timber to transport out of the woods, down a soggy field and then 120 miles to Whitby.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of this job was easy, leave them for three months to season, dry out a bit so they would be lighter to handle.\u00a0 \u00a0For the next bit of the journey out of the woods and down the field I gave up trying to think of clever solutions and used muscle power instead.\u00a0 \u00a0My son earned his dinner that day!<\/p>\n<p>Last Week I had a \u00a0<a title=\"CX500 Trike building\" href=\"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/2012\/cx500-trike-building\/\">Trike Trailer<\/a>, this week it\u2019s a bespoke beam trailer.\u00a0 It took a ladder, \u00a0a step ladder some rope and many tie down straps.\u00a0 Looking rather precarious but actually very stable, the load was ready for the trip to the Whitby Cottage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_835\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/downloads\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Beam-Loaded.jpg');\"  href=\"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Beam-Loaded.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-835\" class=\" wp-image-835 \" title=\"Beam-Loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Beam-Loaded.jpg\" alt=\"5.3 meter timber beam loade on trailer\" width=\"540\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Beam-Loaded.jpg 600w, https:\/\/idostuff.co.uk\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Beam-Loaded-300x241.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trailer loaded with 5.3m timber beam plus the 50m of skirting board<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The rain held off for journey but the high winds over the Yorkshire Moors where getting worrying.\u00a0 But safe and sound the complete load made it to within 30 metres of the cottage.\u00a0 The road is too narrow to park any closer.
