The Sliding Sash Window, or Double Hung Window as its called in America, is showing a massive upsurge in popularity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s an fantastically successful design. A 100 or 200 year\u00a0\u00a0lifespan is proven.\u00a0 Compared to around 20 years for\u00a0uPVC windows,\u00a0the\u00a0timber sliding sash window is a winner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In these days of energy conservation the traditional\u00a0Double Hung Sliding Sash is unsuitable as a replacement window.\u00a0 Unfortunately the\u00a0tradition design is unsuitable for\u00a0fitting\u00a0the double\u00a0glazing units that regulations stipulate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many companies now manufacture alternative designs, some good, some\u00a0in my opinion,\u00a0very bad.\u00a0\u00a0It’s obviously a highly profitable market, with strong demand and high margins.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A couple of years ago, I\u00a0embarked on project to build my own double glazed sliding sash windows.\u00a0 No suitable plans where available so (as a trained designer) I set about\u00a0\u00a0researching\u00a0the subject in\u00a0great detail.\u00a0<\/p>\n

An understanding of historical window designs to inform 21st century developments<\/p><\/div>\n

I’ve\u00a0analysed the construction details of the\u00a0Box Sliding Sash. (Available soon.) This has allowed me to fully understand the tried and tested construction.\u00a0It highlights where, in the light of modern developments, the design can be evolved.\u00a0 I’ll be publishing construction details and plans for an\u00a0evolved, traditional sash window shortly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The final part of project will be available as a set of plans, details and explanations for a 21st century fully evolved sliding sash windows.\u00a0 Combining technology with craftsmanship, these windows can be built in a shed with a minimal investment in tooling.\u00a0<\/p>\n
